The Museum of London and the British Museum have come together to offer joint tickets for their major autumn exhibitions that will open in London, showcasing remarkable and stunning jewellery and historical treasures made of gold and other precious materials.
THE CHEAPSIDE HOARD: LONDON'S LOST JEWELS
Museum of London
11 October 2013 to 27 April 2014
This is the first time that this priceless cache of Elizabethan and Jacobean jewels and gemstones has been displayed in its entirety since its discovery under a cellar floor in London's Cheapside over 100 years ago. With nearly 500 glittering pieces – primarily crafted in prized gold – the Hoard includes delicate finger rings, ornate brooches, cascading necklaces, Byzantine cameos, a beautiful jewelled scent bottle, and gems from all over the world including sapphires from Sri Lanka, diamonds and rubies from India, pearls from the Middle East, opals from Hungary and emeralds from Colombia. Now known to be a jeweller's stock-in-trade, this exquisite collection of jewels is the single most important source of our knowledge on early modern jewellery worldwide. Sponsored by Fabergé, Gemfields and Coutts and supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation.
BEYOND EL DORADO: POWER AND GOLD IN ANCIENT COLOMBIA
British Museum
17 October 2013 to 23 March 2014
For centuries Europeans were dazzled by the legend of a lost city of gold, but behind the myth of El Dorado (literally ‘the golden one’) lies an intriguing ritual carried out at Lake Guatavita, near present day Bogotá. This major new exhibition will explore the diversity and richness of pre-Hispanic cultures in Colombia, where gold was used to fashion some of the most visually dramatic and technically sophisticated works of art found in the Americas. Featuring over 300 spectacular objects – on loan from the Museo del Oro in Bogotá, Colombia, one of the best and most extensive collections of pre-Hispanic gold in the world, and drawn from the British Museum’s own collection – this exhibition will highlight how gold was used to assert identity, rank and status as well as in ritual ceremonies and in communicating with the supernatural. Sponsored by Julius Baer with additional support provided by American Airlines.
