Obsidian Tear - Mixed Bill

Royal Opera House, London, WC2E 9DD
  • The final mixed programme of the 2017/18 Season gives a taste of The Royal Ballet’s rich and diverse repertory, collecting together distinctive works by three of the Company’s Resident Choreographers.
Wayne McGregor, the Company’s current Resident Choreographer, is renowned around the world for evolving ballet yet further through richly collaborative works. McGregor’s Obsidian Tear opens the programme, in the ballet’s first revival since its 2016 premiere. It is set to works by Finnish composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and has been acclaimed as ‘one of McGregor’s strongest works to date’ (The Guardian).
Frederick Ashton was The Royal Ballet’s founder choreographer and the originator of the English style exemplified by the Company. Ashton created Marguerite and Armand as a dramatic showpiece for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. Following in their footsteps are new generations of Ashtonian dancers, in this sweeping romance set to Liszt’s tumultuous Piano Sonata.
Kenneth MacMillan transformed ballet with his dramatic and psychologically acute works. MacMillan’s upbeat and irresistible Elite Syncopations closes the programme – its witty, sexy setting of ragtime music sure to send you away with a spring in your step.
