The paintings will be displayed with the ‘cinematic’ masterpieces that inspired Cole, such as swirling storms painted by Turner and nightmarish battle scenes created by Constable. When you visit the National Gallery you can also see a free exhibition by contemporary artist Ed Ruscha in Room 1 who was inspired by Thomas Cole’s ‘The Course of Empire’ series.
