Chroma - Mixed Bill

Royal Opera House, London, WC2E 9DD
  • The Royal Ballet celebrates Wayne McGregor’s 10 years as Resident Choreographer with an all-McGregor programme, including one world premiere to a new commission by Steve Reich.

    Chroma

Wayne McGregor’s Chroma explores the drama of the human body and its ability to communicate extremes of thought and emotion. The score is drawn from original music by Joby Talbot and his arrangements of music by American rock band The White Stripes, while acclaimed architect John Pawson provides stark, minimalist designs. Against this backdrop, McGregor’s highly inventive choreography unfurls with ferocious energy.
Chroma had its premiere in 2006 at the Royal Opera House and in 2007 received an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Its success paved the way for McGregor’s appointment as Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. A popular favourite with audiences and critics, Chroma is a classic of contemporary ballet.

    Carbon Life

Wayne McGregor’s Carbon Life channels all the energy, inventiveness and verve of contemporary pop and fashion. Music producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (from Miike Snow) created the score, and for the 2012 premiere assembled a supergroup of live musicians including Boy George, Wale and Alison Mosshart. Leading fashion designer Gareth Pugh reinvents traditional ballet dress in his costume designs to create bold, structural counterpoints to the hyper-extended movement of McGregor’s choreography.

    New Wayne McGregor

In his latest work for the Company, McGregor collaborates with composer Steve Reich – a pioneer in contemporary music – who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2016. The Royal Ballet and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House present the world premiere of this new work by Reich, while acclaimed artists Rashid Rana creates the designs for the ballet – making this premiere a thrilling partnership between leading creative figures in three branches of contemporary art.
