The Queen of Spades

Royal Opera House, London, WC2E 9DD
  • Based on the short story by Alexander PushkinThe Queen of Spades directed by Stefan Herheim comes to the Royal Opera House in 2019.
The Queen of Spades is one of Tchaikovsky's most impressive and varied scores, contains grand choruses, intimate arias and duets, a masquerade paying tribute to Mozart and a terrifying supernatural episode. Stefan Herheim's spectacular production places Tchaikovsky himself at the heart of the action, and asks searching questions about the nature of creativity and the parallels between life and art.
The story tells the tale of a penniless soldier, Gherman, who has fallen in love with Liza, even though she is engaged to his friend Yeletsky. Gherman learns that Liza's guardian, the Countess, knows a winning three-card fomula. Gherman is determined to wrest the secret from the Countess, gain a fortune through gambling and marry Liza.
