Dark Night of the Soul

Dark Night of the Soul

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Bankside, SE1 9DT
  • Dark Night of the Soul at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this Winter, directed by Just Christian.
    'That time may cease, and
    midnight never come'
    Doctor Faustus.
The Faustian myth continues to fascinate and intrigue, particularly in times of moral crisis. But the myth has been so appropriated by man, the male, the masculine, that there has been little exploration or discovery of what it means for the woman, the female, the feminine, to stop at a crossroads and 'sell her soul'.
Macbeth and Doctor Faustus are Shakespeare’s and Marlowe’s responses to the Faustian bargain, so whilst they are performed throughout the winter, a new series of responses will play in tandem, all written for the unique architectural playing conditions of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
An ensemble of women writers that includes Lily Bevan, Athena Stevens, Lisa Hammond and Rachael Spence, Katie Hims and Amanda Wilkin, will respond to the provocation, with the ultimate aim of creating a chorus of female voices at the crossroads, asking the question: What would you sell your soul for?
In their first festival of the season, they will explore early modern and modern responses to the themes of power and corruption.
Ambitious Fiends runs November 2018 – February 2019 and includes Macbeth, Doctor Faustus, Dark Night of the Soul and Ralegh: The Treason Triall.
At the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse,  from 29 December 2018 – 2 February 2019, book your Dark Night of the Soul tickets today!

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the brand new candlelit indoor theatre, located on the Shakespeare's Globe site and is accessed through the main foyer.

Located on the bank of the River Thames in Bankside's Cultural Quarter, Shakespeare's Globe welcomes thousands of visitors to experience world renowned productions of Shakespeare every day.

Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare's Globe stands a few hundred yards from its original site.
