Edward II

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Bankside, SE1 9DT
  • Edward II at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this Winter, directed by Nick Bagnall.
'But what are kings, when regiment is gone,
but perfect shadows in a sunshine day?'
    Act V, scene 1
King Edward recalls his lover, Gaveston, from banishment and sets in motion a chain of events that will culminate in some fo the most shocking scenes in all of early modern theatre.
Threatened by the preferment shown to the 'upstart' Gaveston, and exasperated by Edward's neglect of matters of state, the king's nobles join forces with Queen Isabella and the clergy to plot the downfall of Edward's circle of flatterers, and ultimately of the king himself.
Edward II is a play about homosexuality, the abuse of power and a quarreling court. Filled with song and poetry and heart and guts, it is a violent, sumptuous and altogether thrilling ride of a Renaissance piece set in the period it was written (1593 or thereabouts). Ten actors and three musicians will take on this incredibly visceral story in the candlelit beauty of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Their second festival of the season, probes the fine, if not invisible, line between the personal and the political. On the Shoulders of Ghosts runs February – April 2019 and includes Edward II, Richard II and After Edward.
At the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse,  from 7 February to 20 April 2019, book your Edward II tickets today!

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the brand new candlelit indoor theatre, located on the Shakespeare's Globe site and is accessed through the main foyer.

Located on the bank of the River Thames in Bankside's Cultural Quarter, Shakespeare's Globe welcomes thousands of visitors to experience world renowned productions of Shakespeare every day.

Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare's Globe stands a few hundred yards from its original site.
