Afternoon Of A Faun - Mixed Bill

Royal Opera House, London, WC2E 9DD
  • The Royal Ballet's mixed programme brings together two of Jerome Robbins's masterpieces with Kenneth MacMillan's powerful depiction of love and loss.
Jerome Robbins (West Side Story) was one of the finest choreographers of the 20th century. In their mixed programme The Royal Ballet dance two of his most characteristic works: Afternoon of a Faun and In the Night. Each is an insightful portrait of human relationships, at turns witty, compassionate and elegiac.
Afternoon of a Faun is Robbins's poignant setting of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune is a modern ballet classic. In his ballet In The Night, accompanied by Chopin’s piano nocturnes, hints at chandelier-lit ballrooms and romantic rendezvous.
The programme closes with Kenneth MacMillan's Song of the Earth, a powerful exploration in ballet of love, loss and renewal. MacMillan set Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in 1958, creating an elegiac work of breathtaking beauty.
