The Seagull

Open Air Theatre, London, NW1 4NU
  • The first of Anton Chekhov's great works, The Seagull is celebrated as one of the most important plays of the nineteenth century.
“Young love, enchanting, poetic love, the sort that transports us to the land of dreams – that’s the only happiness life has to offer us”
As guests assemble at a country house for the staging of an avant-garde open air play, artistic temperaments ignite a more entertaining drama behind the scenes, with romantic jealousies, self-doubt and the ruthless pursuit of happiness confusing lives, loves and literature.
English language version by Torben Betts.

‘Terrific. Matthew Dunster’s superbly acted revival achieves the near-impossible: it jolts its audience awake with its dream-like action. I’ve never quite heard laughter like it, indoors or out…ripples of amusement turning into cascades of merriment. As the evening naturally darken, the soulful genius of Chekhov’s drama takes glorious wing. Bravo.’
    The Daily Telegraph

‘I adored it: a lively new version of a classic. This is a high-flying Seagull.’
    Evening Standard

‘Designed by Jon Bausor, it makes exquisite sense of this theatre’s sylvan setting.’
    The Times

‘A fresh, free-flying new adaptation. This electric, blackly funny adaptation brings out both the venom and the anguish of hopeless longing in Chekhov’s original; an intelligently provocative production.’
    Time Out
