Another West End star heads to Broadway!

Olivier Award winner Bertie Carvel will reprise the role of Miss Trunchbull when MATILDA THE MUSICAL opens on Broadway in 2013. The curtain lifts on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s eagerly awaited musical on March 4 at the Shubert Theatre.

The original West End production won a record-breaking seven 2012 Olivier Awards, including Best Actor in a Musical for Carvel. Time Out London hailed his performance as Miss Trunchbull as “devastatingly original”, with the Daily Telegraph celebrating it as “at once terrifying and hilarious”.

Carvel can currently be seen in the National Theatre’s DAMNED BY DESPAIR, by the great Spanish dramatist Tirso de Molina, until December 17 at the Olivier Theatre.

MATILDA THE MUSICAL is based on the beloved story by Roald Dahl, who also wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James & the Giant Peach, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Young Matilda Wormwood uses her vivid imagination and extraordinary abilities to escape her rotten parents, terrifying school and vicious head mistress, with the help of her teacher and friends.

With book by playwright Dennis Kelly, and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, MATILDA THE MUSICAL is directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus(God of Carnage).

The Royal Shakespeare Company is working together with New York’s Dodger Properties to bring MATILDA THE MUSICAL to the Great White Way. Dodger Properties has been behind a number of major Broadway and West End hits, including the award winning JERSEY BOYS, which plays in both New York and London.
